Early works: Surface colour and Radial Forms

The Sunbursts series explores repetition, surface, and colour through circular compositions made from many individual porcelain elements. Each work is built from hand-formed shards that are arranged radially and mounted on a clear acrylic backing, allowing light to interact with both the surface of the work and the space around it.

This body of work represents an earlier stage in my practice, where colour and glaze were the primary drivers. Layered glazes, metallic highlights, and surface variation were used to capture movement, reflection, and light, particularly in response to water and natural phenomena. Gold details are applied sparingly to draw attention to edges and moments where light catches the surface.

While these works are visually bold, they also mark the beginning of my interest in repetition and accumulation. The use of many similar elements, arranged as a single field, laid the groundwork for later work where form became more restrained and shadow took on a more active role.

The Sunbursts series sits as a point of transition within my practice — moving from surface-led exploration toward the quieter, more spatial investigations found in my eggshell and installation-based work.
