Awakening
Eggshell Works
Note: Wall colour has a significant impact on both the work and the shadows it casts, and can either enhance or undermine the piece.
Eggshell-like porcelain forms form the anchor of my practice. I use these repeated forms to explore fragility, accumulation, and how light and shadow operate across a surface or within a space. While each element is made by hand, the work relies on repetition and arrangement rather than individual objects.
Awakening was my first exploration using eggshell forms. In this work, the porcelain elements are similar in size and adhered directly to an acrylic backing. The fixed placement allowed me to focus on repetition, surface, and the relationship between form and background, while beginning to observe how shadow contributes to the overall composition.
Star Spangled
Star Spangled builds on this initial exploration by introducing variation in scale and depth. The eggshell forms are made in different sizes and mounted at varying heights, allowing them to project further into space. This shift makes shadow a more active element of the work, changing with light and viewpoint, and moving the work away from a flat surface toward a more spatial reading.
Subsequent works continue this enquiry by further developing variation in height, spacing, and installation. By allowing the forms to extend into space, shadow becomes increasingly pronounced, shifting as the viewer moves around the work.
Several works within the collection are installed rather than wall-mounted. In these pieces, the eggshell forms are arranged as groupings or fields, encouraging the viewer to move around them and notice how repetition, shadow, and negative space interact. Installation allows the work to extend beyond the wall and reinforces my interest in accumulation and quiet rhythm.
Porcelain paper clay, layered glazes, and occasional gold lustre are used throughout the collection. These materials support an ongoing exploration of restraint, variation, and how simple repeated forms can create complexity through light and space.
